Meagan Smith

Dr. Smith received her B.A. in chemistry along with a minor in Spanish and mathematics at Washington & Jefferson College, in Washington, PA. She then went on to the University of South Carolina where she received her Ph.D. in chemistry.  Her specialties include analytical method development, extraction, and identification of toxins associated with harmful algal blooms, as well as the understanding kinetics associated with the production of reactive oxygen species from the autoxidation of naturally occurring polyphenols. She has worked closely with public health officials at the local, state, and federal level surrounding environmental concerns associated with harmful algal blooms and water quality. When Dr. Smith is not in the lab, she enjoys cooking, baking bread, and building puzzles.
