Laura Gomez (Psychology and Translation & Interpretation Major, '18) and Ana Longo (Psychology Premed and Biochemistry Premed, '18) presented research with Dr. Erin Dupuis at the Southeastern Psychological Association's 64th Annual Meeting in Charleston, SC on March 7th. Their research poster was titled, "Effect of Political Statements on Attitudes and Behavior Toward Women."
Psychological Sciences major, Oanh Nyguen, received a $2500 National Gilman Scholarship to study in the Netherlands. Oanh was selected from a national pool of more than 1,000 applications.

Iris Lopez and Brianna Jancuska accompanied Dr. Evan Zucker to Ranchería Josefa Ortiz de Dominquez located near the town of Balancán, Tabasco, in southeastern México, on the banks of the Usumacinta River, for a 3-week study of black howling monkeys during July 2017. There, one group of monkeys, containing one adult male, three adult females, one juvenile female, and one infant male, was observed. This group inhabited a forest fragment about 1.5 miles from the field station where the researchers lived, so walking at least 6 miles per day was typical.
Dr. Erin Dupuis, Associate Professor in Psychological Sciences, published a chapter in the recently released Sage Encyclopedia of Psychology and Gender. The chapter titled, "Acquaintance Rape" covers definition issues, prevalence, and factors related to victims and perpetrators.
Dr. Glenn Hymel Received the 2017 American Massage Therapy Association Lifetime Achievement Award.
Nydia Araya ('17) won the Magis Student Leadership Award in the Category of "Student Employee of the Year" for her work in the Student Success Center. Nydia will be attending Louisiana State University this Fall to receive her Master's degree in Higher Education Administration. Congratulations Nydia!
Andrea Cornelius, Loyola University '17 Alumna, won the 2016 Southeastern Psychological Association's Graduate Student Research Award for her presentation titled, "Personality Traits and Perceptions of Sexual Infidelity". Cornelius completed her Senior Thesis with Dr. Kim Ernst, Associate Professor of Psychology. She is currently a graduate student at the University of West Florida studying Industrial-Organizational Psychology. She will begin the Ph.D. program in Industrial-Organizational Psychology at St.Louis University this August 2017.
Dr. Shaawn Ali '08 is chief resident at a Miami hospital, finishing up medical school and a program that had him traveling around the Middle East practicing medicine.
How He Got There: He wanted to be involved in the local health care system, majored in pre-health psychology, conceived and conducted a study on campus with his faculty mentor, won first place overall in the social sciences category at the Louisiana Academy of Sciences, turned down an offer for a full-time position with the Saints to focus on his studies in medicine.
Psychology Students Volunteer and Present Research at Society for Cross Cultural Research Conference
Several Psychological Sciences majors volunteered at and presented research at the 46th Annual Society for Cross Cultural Research Conference held in New Orleans March 1-4, 2017. Dr. Varela and his research assistants (Haley Dourron, Gabby Pucci, Kirsten Klein, Ruth Infante, Nacy Nguyen, and Joshua Quintana) presented a poster titled, "Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Age of Evaluation among Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Explanatory Variables."
