Tony Lam

Tuan Lam, Ph.D. is a visiting assistant professor at Loyola University New Orleans who began in August 2015. Dr. Lam earned his B.S. in industrial engineering at Georgia Tech before earning his Ph.D. in cognitive psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to coming to Loyola University New Orleans, he completed training as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Northwestern University.

Dr. Lam’s area of research is psycholinguistics, an interdisciplinary field that combines insights from both cognitive psychology and linguistics. His work primarily focuses on conversational reference and prosodic prominence. In particular, he studies the words that speakers choose to emphasize in a sentence and how that emphasis affects the meaning of the sentence. More recently, he has begun to study bilingualism and its effects on speech production and perception. His research is frequently presented at both psychology and linguistics conferences including the CUNY Conference on Human Sentence Processing, the annual meeting for the Cognitive Science Society, and the annual meeting of the Psychonomic Society.
