Dr. Jean Brager directed four students (Bari James Bellard, Antoine Barriere, and Linsey Shubert, Loyola students; and Luke Condzal, Tulane student) in a montage of monologues and scenes from the French and Francophone repertoire during two evenings in April 2016. The scenes led the audience behind the curtain, behind the façade of acting, and behind what is really at play onstage: the subtext of emotions. When art becomes deconstruction, life--and any action on or off stage, for that matter--is essentially performative.
Senior Genesis Rodas (French, 2016) has received the Escadrille Louisiane program's Teaching Assistantship in France for 2016-2017. This Teaching Assistant Program in France (TAPIF), sponsored by the French Ministry of Education, for the 2016-2017 academic year, will place Genesis in Rennes, France, at the Académie de Rennes. In addition, she is sponsored through CODOFIL, the Council on the Development of French in Louisiana, to attend classes at the Université de Rennes, to begin her Masters in Teaching degree in French.

On March 3, 2016, Dr. Trevor Boffone presented "The Panza Monologues: Latin@ Theatre in the US, Comedy, and Social Consciousness" to an audience of students and professors of Latin American Studies and Spanish, as well as others from the Loyola community. The talk included dramatic readings of two scenes from The Panza Monologues, performed by senior Spanish major Akeem Biggs.

Our first edition of the "FRENCHOTHON: a trivia competition on France" drew 30 students who participated actively during the 75-minute session on October 21, 2015. The students' majors were varied, and the winners received some amazing prizes!

Two years ago, Lisbeth Philip, Ph.D., helped launch Loyola University New Orleans’ Spanish/English Translation and Interpreting Certificate Program, the first in the Gulf Coast region. On June 25, Philip made history again, becoming one of the first five Certified Court Interpreters for the Louisiana Supreme Court. Philip, who is academic director of Loyola’s Translation and Interpreting Program, was sworn in by The Hon. Jeannette Theriot Knoll ’66, J.D.

Jazmin Woods (Spanish 2015) received the Outstanding Achievement in Service Learning Award in 2015. The award was presented at the Magis Student Leadership Awards ceremony held at Loyola on Tuesday, April 28, 2015. Jazmin received this honor due to her diligent work at the APEX Youth Center in Fall 2015 as part of her class with Dr. Eileen Doll, SPAN A311, Survey of Spanish Literature II: Technology and Literature.

Molly Alper, who graduated with a bachelor's degree in Sociology and Spanish (2014), will travel to South America to do research on human trafficking, an issue she has been studying since her freshman year at Loyola. "I plan to research how governments and nonprofits can improve social services for victims of human trafficking," Alper said. "More specifically, I will be interviewing trafficking survivors about the reintegration process and how we can improve long-term services so that victims do not have to return to that life.
