Visiting Assistant Professor Drew Chastain published his research this January on the relationship been freedom of the will and the meaningfulness of life in the journal Philosophia.
Associate Professor of Philosophy Jonathan Peterson presented his paper “Privatizing Criminal Punishment” at the American Section of the International Association for the Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy at Boston University on August 17, 2018.
Philosophy junior Grant Dufrene is currently helping Dr. Connie Mui to edit a forth coming volume on the philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre. Grant reports,
Joel MacClellan, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy, has taken over as Editor-in-Chief of the Animal & Society Institute's Sloth: Journal of Emerging Voices in Human-Animal Studies, the top HAS undergraduate journal.
Philosophy and History double major, Political Science minor Thanh Mai has won a Fulbright award at the Universiteit Hasselt in Belgium during the 2018-2019 academic year. After she completes her time in Belgium, she will begin graduate work in philosophy at the Central European University in Budapest, Hungary. Congratulations, Thanh!

Students will begin their studies abroad next semester thanks to this wonderful opportunity.
"The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, thereby gaining skills critical to our national security and economic competitiveness.
Patrick Klena (magna cum laude, 2016) has entered the Graduate Program in Philosophy at St. Louis University. While at Loyola, Patrick received the Guy Lemieux S.J. award for his outstanding work as a philosophy major, and his senior thesis ("John Duns Scotus on the Problem of Individuation") was recognized by the University Honors Program as the Best Humanities honors thesis of his year. At St. Louis, Patrick intends to pursue his interest in ancient and medieval philosophy. The Department wishes him great success in his future studies!
Philosophy major Tara Malay ('16) will be teaching middle school in Finland this fall. Tara will be helping to instruct children in home economics, English, history, social studies, Swedish, and biology at the Viitaniemen koulu (Viitaniemi school). Tara is also continuing to work on her master's degree in applied linguistics at University of Jyväskylä. Congratulations, Tara!
